DE&I Cable Wide Training

Disability Etiquette/Communicating with Individuals with Disabilities

The discussion, led by Teresa Smith and Stephanie Cowherd from UT Center for Literacy, Education and Employment, focuses on disability etiquette basics and effective communication strategies. It emphasizes the importance of avoiding assumptions, showing respect, and asking before offering help. Instances of utilizing person-first language are emphasized for direct interaction with individuals with disabilities and when addressing them within the community. Interactive exercises, such as a disability quiz and scenario-based discussions, are employed to practice appropriate responses.

Various techniques for interacting with individuals with different types of disabilities are discussed, including those who use wheelchairs, have low vision, are deaf or hard of hearing, have speech impairments, or have traumatic brain injuries. Additionally, the session delves into the distinctions between service dogs, emotional support dogs, and therapy dogs, providing clarity on their respective roles and purposes.
